Fire Emergency

All fire alarms will be considered as real “life threatening” situations with no exceptions, including prearranged evacuation test drills. The fire alarm horns and strobe lights will be activated to alert the occupants to evacuate the buildings.

No Dunwoody employee, student, or guest may remain in a Dunwoody facility once the alarms have been sounded.

If smoke or fire is present:

  • Activate the fire alarm system by pulling the lever on the nearest building fire pull station.
  • Dial 612-381-3328. Give Public Safety the following information:
    • Your name and telephone number
    • Exact location of the fire
    • What is on fire and the size of the fire
  • Do not panic. Keep calm.
  • Do not re-enter a burning building.

Fire alarm sounding and flashing status:

Evacuate the building immediately. Do not stop to call the Fire Department. Dunwoody buildings are fire-panel monitored for this type of alarm and the Public Safety staff is notified automatically.

Individuals with disabilities are to report to the building landings as a safe haven to wait for assistance from the responding fire department. Able-bodied individuals may notify fire fighters and Public Safety Officers of the location of the waiting mobility impaired individuals and, as appropriate, their attendant. The Department of Public Safety has procedures to assist with the incident and direct Emergency Services to the area. Public Safety and Facilities staff will make sure everyone has cleared the premises.

Evacuation Procedures

If a building evacuation is declared by the fire department, police, or administration, please leave the building area as directed. Do not stand around in hallways or on the sidewalks near the building. Do not re-enter the building until Public Safety or Administration gives the “all clear.”

In the event of a partial or full building evacuation, Public Safety and campus staff will direct the evacuation. In case of fire, the emergency sirens will sound. Please follow the maps located at the entrance of each stairway.

Do:

  • Listen for announcements over the campus Public Address System or the RAVE Emergency Notification System for directions.
  • Follow one of the two evacuation routes shown on the maps located at the entrance of each stairway for proper evacuation.
  • Evacuate the building in an orderly manner, which is more important than speed.
  • Watch for firefighters coming to handle the emergency.
  • Take short breaths through your nose, stay near the floor, and move to an exit by crawling and cover your nose and mouth with shirt if caught in heavy smoke.

Do Not:

  • Attempt to fight fire unless trained to do so.
  • Use an elevator.
  • Run, push, or create panic.
  • Return to your office or classroom until the “all clear” is given by the Department of Public Safety or Administration.
