Dunwoody College of Technology to fill need for Facilities Management Professionals

College approved to launch two-year degree in Facilities Operations & Management

July 5, 2018, MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Earlier this month, Dunwoody College of Technology received approval to offer an Associate of Applied Science in Facilities Operations & Management from the Minnesota Office of Higher Education and the Higher Learning Commission. The program launches this fall and will prepare graduates to enter the field of facilities management in operations and management roles, such as operations manager, building services supervisor, and assistant property manager.

“We aim to graduate professionals who have both the technical and the soft skills required to succeed in today’s facilities management environments,” Senior Instructor Derek Hillestad said. “Maintenance is still a crucial part of the job, but what most people probably don’t realize is that facilities management professionals are often tasked with asset management, space management, and/or building safety and security.”

Hillestad served for nine years as Director of Operations of TCF Bank Stadium and took the lead in developing the curriculum for the program.

“The field of facilities management has changed quite a lot in just the past decade,” he said. “But there’s a lot more change still to come as a generation of senior professionals retire and more and more building owners realize that asset stewardship through data-based technology investments can improve facility operation effectiveness and efficiency, leading to energy savings and a better experience for those who use the building.”

Classes will take place in the evening so professionals already working in the field can get the training they need to move into operations and management roles.

Other points of note:
  • Because of its importance to modern facilities management, Dunwoody has embedded the concept of sustainability in all of its classes.
  • The entire Dunwoody campus will be used as a learning laboratory. With a blend of old to modern facilities on campus, including a multi-million dollar renovation of a former gymnasium space that opens in September, students will benefit from a holistic approach to managing buildings.
  • Software systems are now crucial to the operation of modern facilities. Students will graduate with the ability to work with a variety of software programs, including computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS), REVIT and SketchUp for computer-aided design, integrated workforce management systems (IWMS), and building monitoring systems.
  • Dunwoody’s program has been designed to be consistent with the International Facilities Management Association’s (IFMA) Facilities Management Accreditation Commission (FMAC) associate degree program standards and will seek program accreditation.

Facilities Operation & Management is part of Dunwoody’s offerings in Construction Sciences & Building Technology and will benefit from existing lab spaces and faculty in HVAC, electrical, architecture, and construction management.

Construction Sciences & Building Technology fish house to be raffled Dec. 6

 On Oct. 17 and 18 Construction Sciences & Building Technology students built a Minnesota Bound-themed fish house for Fish House Frenzy Twin Cities.

Teams from Adolfson & Peterson Construction and Kraus-Anderson Construction also participated in the 24-hour construction competition to raise funds for Rebuilding Together Twin Cities, which makes critical repairs for homeowners in need–particularly older adults, individuals living with disabilities, families with small children and members of the armed forces.

While the other fish houses were auctioned off already, the Dunwoody team’s fish house is still available via raffle to be drawn on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 3 p.m. in the parking lot of Joe’s Sporting Goods, 33 East County Road B, St. Paul.

In addition to raising money for a good cause, the students learned about the importance of preparation and teamwork.

Students learned through trial and error how to manage people and time. During a recap session they shared ideas about technical and management problems that arose,” said Senior Instructor James Strapko. “For example, they agreed on the value of preparation and following the drawings. They also recognized the need for establishing clear lines of authority and matching work crews with tasks.”

Through the competition construction students formed partnerships with other Dunwoody programs. The College’s HVAC and Electrical students provided some labor and materials for this year’s project, and Interior Design students have expressed interest in participating with the College’s Fish House Frenzy team next year.

Leading Technical College Rolls Out More Stackable Courses

Dunwoody College of Technology, one of the country’s longest running technical colleges, is to begin graduating bachelor degree students in Architecture. The announcement follows approval from the Higher Learning Commission and comes as part of Dunwoody’s plans to expand their selection of stackable education programs.

Dunwoody also received eligibility for candidacy with the National Architectural Accreditation Board, which will soon allow graduates to receive a professional Bachelor of Architecture degree and become licensed architects.

The College is currently accepting applications for freshmen starting in fall 2014 and will begin accepting current students, alumni and transfer students into year three of the program starting in fall 2015. All students will graduate with a Bachelor of Architecture.

“Dunwoody has a long history of training architectural drafters,” says Bridget Reynolds, dean of Construction Sciences & Building Technology. “Discussions with industry and alumni over the past few years have suggested that there is a strong need to bring the Dunwoody model of applied education to preparing students to become licensed architects.”

The program is structured as a two plus three stackable credential, awarding an Associate of Applied science degree after the first two years and a Bachelor of Architecture degree upon completion of the final three years.

In their first, immersive two years of study, students will become experts in current design and building technologies, making them ideal employees in building design and construction industries. In their final three years, they will then become leaders in the profession of architecture as well as in the advancement of design and building technologies.

“This method flips the standard model of architectural education,” says John Dwyer, Senior Instructor of Architectural Drafting & Design. “Usually it’s abstract thinking first, technical proficiency second. This model allows students to become very employable very early in their education. And, much like Picasso who began with technical figure drawing, it gives students foundational knowledge to draw from, giving them a stronger ability to apply abstract thinking. This way, theory, history, design, leadership, research and everything else can be taught within the hands-on, project-based Dunwoody model.”

Enrolled participants in the program will have the opportunity to collaborate with students in other Dunwoody technical programs such as Interior Design, Construction Management, and Machine Tool Technology. This will help them develop skills in communicating with professionals in other fields while learning to manage design challenges within real-world applications.

Dunwoody College of Technology’s Interior Design program receives CIDA accreditation

Dunwoody College of Technology’s Bachelor of Science Interior Design program has been granted a six-year accreditation from the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA)—an independent, non-profit accrediting organization for interior design education programs at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.

Dunwoody College of Technology joins the University of Minnesota as the only Minnesota colleges with CIDA accreditation.

To gain accreditation a college must have a four-year bachelor degree program that meets 16 standards related to mission, goals, curriculum; critical thinking, professional values and processes; core design and technical knowledge; and program administration.

Interior Design Program Manager Colleen Schmaltz noted Dunwoody’s Interior Design program has been in the process of refining curriculum and archiving student work to demonstrate CIDA standards for four years.

“It’s been a long process, but it’s been worth it because we understand the importance of achieving this accreditation for the success of our students, our program, and our profession” she said.

Schmaltz said adhering to the CIDA guidelines helped ensure the program included all the necessary elements to graduate capable, creative designers.

“Our approach is hands on. We’re a technical college and our students have superior technical knowledge with various design software programs,” she said. “We’re about educating designers who have practical knowledge and strong design expertise. Our graduates know what they’re doing on the first day on the job.”

Dunwoody’s focus in hiring Interior Design faculty is to bring in practicing professionals with a wide variety of specialties who are also educators completing advanced degrees.

“They’re extraordinary practitioners and excellent teachers. It shows up in students’ work big time. The level of expertise is there. The confidence is there,” she said. “I think the rigors of the program are such that people graduating from an accredited program know that the best firms are looking for it. They’re eager for interns and new hires with a solid educational background.

“We have a fabulous program. And we’re turning out fabulous designers who are passionate about their newfound professions.”

DUNWOODY COLLEGE APPROVED TO OFFER BACHELOR’S COMPLETION PROGRAM IN CONSTRUCTION LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT

Minneapolis, Minn., June 21, 2012 — Dunwoody College of Technology has received official approval from the Higher Learning Commission to offer a bachelor’s completion program in Construction Leadership & Management (CLMA). The degree will focus on the principles of leading teams and companies through construction projects while effectively managing construction resources.  The program will accept students who have completed a two-year degree in the area of construction sciences and building technology and is geared toward working professionals.

“The construction industry demands graduates who exemplify the applicable technical knowledge and leadership skills required to manage all phases and types of construction,” said Bridget Reynolds, Director for Construction Sciences & Building Technology. “The CLMA completion degree was designed with these needs in mind utilizing Dunwoody’s 98 year history of applied education in construction.”

The CLMA program was developed under guidance from working professionals in the construction industry, faculty, and Dunwoody alumni.  A Program Advisory Committee (PAC) is being formed to continue guiding the future direction of the program.

“We’re hearing more and more from our industry partners that they want employees with a bachelor’s degree,” President Rich Wagner said. “They need people with technical skills who also have the business and communication skills to manage teams, interface with customers and handle complex projects. Dunwoody has responded to that need by creating a series of bachelor’s completion programs that our two-years programs feed into as well as graduates of MnSCU colleges and other two-year technical programs. And, of course, just like with our associate’s degree, the focus of our bachelor’s completion programs is a hands-on, applied approach to teaching and learning.”

Dunwoody is also choosing to seek programmatic accreditation from the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE), and the ACCE guidelines were used in the development of the program.
