A career in residential construction

Rex Vanyo is one of more than 100 students to receive the Shamrock Scholarship this year. The goal of the scholarship is to expand the workforce pipeline by providing academic support for students studying construction sciences and building technologies, engineering, and manufacturing.

Rex Vanyo remembers exactly when he first heard about Dunwoody College. He was in the second grade and an older student explained that Dunwoody wasn’t really like other colleges. Instead it was a college where you went when you wanted to learn how to do something.

That conversation was something that stuck with him. So when it came time to decide what he wanted to do after high school, Vanyo knew that four years in business school just wasn’t it.

“One of my best friends, his dad is a general contractor,” he said. “He’s in residential construction and builds custom homes. I’ve seen all these different houses that he has built and that’s what I want to do.”

With that in mind, Vanyo enrolled in the Construction Project Management program, and will graduate next spring with his Associate of Applied Science degree.

Eventually, Vanyo wants to own his own residential construction business. In the meantime, he is enjoying his classes at Dunwoody.

“I’ve never felt that there hasn’t been somebody there to help me,” he said.

“It was the greatest feeling,” Vanyo said about receiving the scholarship. “The weight just lifted off my shoulders. We weren’t wealthy growing up, so this meant a whole lot to me. My Mom was also very excited and proud.”
