How Dunwoody College’s Flugtag Team built a winner

When he first got the invite, E.J. Daigle, Academic Dean, wasn’t sure the College could put together a Redbull Flugtag entry for the Minneapolis competition. It wasn’t a question of capability — it was one of time.

But Dunwoody does have an Experimental Vehicle Bay in our Center for Engineering Excellence, where students and faculty work on wheeled vehicles for various competitions. A Flugtag entry wouldn’t be radically different from those efforts. So Daigle reached out to Adrian Durand, Associate Professor of Automation & Controls Engineering Technology, and asked him if he was interested. Druand was all for it and was willing to put together a team.

The process wasn’t without its challenges, but the result was excellent: Dunwoody’s Red Redbull Flugtag team Ozzy Airborne soared for a record 51 feet and the team won first-place overall in the competition.
