{"id":7743,"date":"2026-09-30T14:26:42","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T19:26:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/?p=7743"},"modified":"2026-09-30T14:38:16","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T19:38:16","slug":"automotive-students-use-their-skills-for-a-good-cause","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/2026\/automotive-students-use-their-skills-for-a-good-cause\/","title":{"rendered":"Automotive students use their skills for a good cause"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading alignwide\">Students in Dunwoody College of Technology&#8217;s Collision Repair &amp; Refinishing and Automotive Service Technology spent several months repairing and refinishing a donated vehicle, which was given to a disabled veteran through the National Auto Body Council (NABC) Recycled Rides program.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What began as a donated vehicle in rough condition became an opportunity for students to use their skills and give back to a local veteran, while also bringing together partners in the automotive and collision industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Recycled Rides: A Project with Purpose\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1231741667?h=78df374ae3&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dunwoody\u2019s Automotive Department partnered with the National Auto Body Council (NABC) Recycled Rides program to transform a vehicle acquired with the help of Morgan Clark of Allstate Insurance. Since 2007, the NABC Recycled Rides program has donated more than 3,750 vehicles valued at more than $67 million. Seventy-five percent of NABC Recycled Rides vehicles are gifted to veterans and military members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From start to finish, the project highlighted the incredible generosity that goes into repairing and refinishing a recycled vehicle. Throughout the process, industry partners, advisory board members, local businesses, and students all contributed their time, skills, and resources to make this donation possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the vehicle arrived, it was a theft recovery in rough condition. Automotive students took on the challenge of getting it to be a safe and reliable vehicle. They carefully installed the drivetrain, new brakes, and tires. AAA Auto Parts donated a low-mileage used engine, and Caliber Collision donated the tires. Collision students then wrote the repair estimate and determined what repairs and parts were needed to make the vehicle road ready. Members of the Advisory Board covered the cost of the necessary parts, while LKQ Refinishing donated all the paint. A student whose family owns a vehicle wrap company also helped replace the vehicle\u2019s blackout tape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For students, the project was more than a hands-on experience. It was an opportunity to apply skills they have been developing in the classroom to a real-world project with meaningful purpose: helping someone in their community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The completed vehicle was presented to Robert Hanson, a local veteran who served as a Navy Airman from 1993 to1997. After experiencing physical hardships, living with a disability and facing other health challenges that make public transportation difficult, having a reliable vehicle will provide him with more independence and mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis car is a tool for you. We hope this vehicle will help drive you forward into this next chapter of your life,\u201d said Brian Briske, Assistant Professor, Automotive Collision Repair &amp; Refinishing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The generosity of everyone involved \u2013 from industry partners and donors to students, faculty, and community members \u2013 made this experience possible.
