How long have you worked at Dunwoody?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

21 years<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How would you explain what you do for a living to a 5-year-old?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I count, measure, and profile teeny tiny plastic particles called \u201cmicroplastics\u201d in air, water, soil, consumer products, and human bodies. I teach people about these contaminants and other issues that involve humans and the natural world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What genre of books do you enjoy, and do you have any recommendations?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I mostly read non-fiction on a range of topics that include environmental science, occupational health and safety, political science, policy, and history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If money and time were no object, what would you spend more of your time doing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love this question! I would take a huge stack of nerdy books and read them on trains, ships, on long walks, and in bars and cafes across the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is a hobby that you have largely abandoned, but you want to pick up again?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While in graduate school I have not made playing the piano a priority. I was able to afford a new instrument by working overtime at Dunwoody more than 13 years ago. It was well worth it as I find it lowers my blood pressure and improves my mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is a personal object you keep at your desk that has a good story behind it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have two glass containers on my desk. One is stuffed with a variety of plastic trash (because I study plastic) and the other is stuffed with dead bugs (because I like to look at them up close with my microscope).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is something you would like more (or less) of in your life that would make you happier?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I love mountain biking! I find it both thrilling and meditative, but I don’t get to go as much as I would like because life is very busy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is something you could brag about, but you don’t (unless an online form asks you)?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I won first place in the 2024 Three Minute Thesis Competition at the University of Minnesota. I will be representing our school in a regional competition this spring. I was also on MPR’s Angela Davis show on January 29, 2025, talking about microplastics during their Wellness Wednesday series.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
