Academic Excellence Award – Genevieve Rainwater, Automotive Collision Repair & Refinishing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Being able to see the results of her hard work is one of the main reasons Genevieve Rainwater decided to pursue a hands-on career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wanted a job where my progress could be physically seen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Rainwater graduated from South High School in Minneapolis in 2021 and was searching for a two-year college online when she came across Dunwoody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI liked that the campus was small and that the class sizes were small and there was more of a hands-on approach to learning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rainwater had an interest in cars, but she wasn\u2019t sure if she would enjoy the service side of the automotive industry. But when a career in collision repair was suggested, she decided to give it a try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognizing hard work<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

It was a decision and a career-field that suited her well. So well, in fact, that the Automotive Technology<\/a> department at Dunwoody selected Rainwater as this year\u2019s Academic Excellence Award recipient for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen she first arrived at Dunwoody, Genevieve had no prior experience,\u201d said Bruce Graffunder, Automotive Collision Repair & Refinishing<\/a> Assistant Professor. \u201cBut she has gone the farthest and shown dedication and perseverance. She is the first one to arrive to class and she comes prepared to learn.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Her success in the classroom is partly because she enjoys what she is learning \u2014 but also because she relates to how it is taught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI really like how the classes are structured in my program,\u201d Rainwater said. \u201cWe focus on a topic for a couple of weeks, and it all builds on what you just previously learned. It also introduces new things at a time where you can understand the importance of the next topic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rainwater said she was honored to be selected for the Academic Excellence Award because it meant she tried her best every day at school \u2014 a sentiment that Graffunder echoed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGenevieve always strives to do quality work,\u201d he said. \u201cIf she doesn\u2019t know how to do something, she knows how to find out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rainwater also enjoys the creative side of her career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy favorite class project was in my first year when we got to paint the fenders we were doing body work on,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was just fun picking out different colors and making the fender look pretty again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking forward to the future<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Rainwater is already working in her field as an Automotive Body Technician Apprentice at the Caliber<\/a> Non-Drive in Bloomington \u2014 and she\u2019s learning a lot on the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Body Technician I work under has been a major inspiration because he has a great work ethic, is knowledgeable, and thorough, which are all traits I\u2019d like to carry into my work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking to her future, Rainwater wants to continue growing in her profession, advancing her skills, and learning more about the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And she\u2019s grateful for the great start her Dunwoody education has given her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
