{"id":6199,"date":"2022-02-28T11:59:32","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T17:59:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/?p=6199"},"modified":"2022-02-28T11:59:32","modified_gmt":"2022-02-28T17:59:32","slug":"dunwoody-architecture-students-gain-experience-working-with-local-firm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/2022\/dunwoody-architecture-students-gain-experience-working-with-local-firm\/","title":{"rendered":"Dunwoody Architecture students gain experience working with local firm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pro-bono projects benefited three local non-profits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Six students from the Dunwoody chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMAS) recently had the opportunity to lend a helping hand to one of the largest architecture firms in Minneapolis.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working side-by-side with the professionals from <a href=\"https:\/\/hga.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/hga.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HGA<\/a>, a national, interdisciplinary design firm, the students participated in a two-day, community-action workshop.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The result produced a full set of design documents, pro-bono, for three Minnesota non-profits.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ellen Obeng and Latoya Dennis, third and fourth-year students in Dunwoody\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/design\/architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bachelor of Architecture program<\/a>, chose to work with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maahmg.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Minnesota African American Heritage Museum and Gallery<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"983\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/NOMAS-HGA-3-983x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/NOMAS-HGA-3-983x1024.png 983w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/NOMAS-HGA-3-288x300.png 288w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/NOMAS-HGA-3-768x800.png 768w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/NOMAS-HGA-3.png 1156w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 983px) 100vw, 983px\" \/><figcaption>photo provided by NOMAS members Lina Ahmed and Pwapedeino Wonosikou<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum, currently located on the fourth floor of 1256 Penn Avenue N., occupies about 1,100 sq feet.&nbsp;During the past three years they have curated about 16 exhibits, and one day they hope to own their own building.&nbsp;It is this dream that led the organization to collaborate with HGA and in turn, Dunwoody students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While researching the workshop clients, Obeng visited the museum\u2019s website and \u201csaw that a lot of the symbols [displayed] come from Ghana, my home country,\u201d she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those that caught her eye were Adinkra symbols, used often in fabrics, pottery, jewelry, or in architecture. She hopes this will be an example for other large firms in the Twin Cities to emulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a great situation for advancing a new pipeline of students into the profession,\u201d Ganapathy said. \u201cThey get to work within the profession, network, and add to their resume.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students also worked on plans for an innovation center, located in Itasca, Minnesota.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Architecture program at Dunwoody is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board and is structured as a stackable degree.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the first two years, graduating students are awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree. Those who complete an additional three years are awarded a Bachelor of Architecture degree.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program was recently accepted to join the <a href=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/2021\/dunwoody-college-of-technology-now-offers-accelerated-licensure-path-for-architecture-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL) initiative<\/a>, which offers students an accelerated path to earn their license upon graduation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Local architecture firm invites National Organization of Minority Architects Dunwoody Chapter to help with community projects<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":6202,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[178],"tags":[223,314],"class_list":["post-6199","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-student-news","tag-architecture","tag-dunwoody-college-of-technology"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
