{"id":6105,"date":"2021-12-10T11:35:38","date_gmt":"2021-12-10T17:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/?p=6105"},"modified":"2021-12-10T11:35:39","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T17:35:39","slug":"architecture-faculty-leaves-mark-with-minneapolis-public-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/2021\/architecture-faculty-leaves-mark-with-minneapolis-public-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Architecture faculty leaves mark with  Minneapolis public art"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dunwoody has a long history of shaping the built landscape of Minneapolis.&nbsp;That tradition continues today as a new public artwork project for the Minneapolis Public Service Building is unveiled.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Molly Reichert, Associate&nbsp;Professor&nbsp;of Architecture&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Design<\/a>, and her partners at Futures North, a&nbsp;public art collaborative, were chosen to create&nbsp;three&nbsp;of the 17 new public artworks&nbsp;for the&nbsp;downtown&nbsp;building located at&nbsp;505 Fourth Ave. S. near City Hall&nbsp;in Minneapolis.<sub><\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said she felt honored and privileged to be chosen to work on the three artworks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe started this project in 2018&nbsp;when anti-immigrant sentiment in the United States was especially high,\u201d Reichert said.&nbsp;\u201cWe wanted to respond in a way that elevates and celebrates the rich history of immigrants&#8217; journeys to and through Minnesota.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Lines of Flight, Avian<\/em>&nbsp;and its companion pieces&nbsp;<em>Lines of Flight, Human&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>Lines of Acknowledgement<\/em>&nbsp;are bird-safe glass&nbsp;installations&nbsp;that explore and tell the story of&nbsp;bird&nbsp;and human migration.&nbsp;They&nbsp;can be read either as a&nbsp;bold super-graphic&nbsp;on the 10<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;floor fa\u00e7ade \u00ad\u2013 when viewed from the street \u2013 or as an intricate lacy pattern&nbsp;along the&nbsp;second-floor&nbsp;skyway connecting the Hennepin County Government Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cExploring the aesthetics of data, we use parametric modeling software and various data-sets to create what we call &#8216;data spatializations&#8217;,\u201d Reichert said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Avian<\/em>&nbsp;shows&nbsp;shapes&nbsp;of Loons in flight and celebrates the migration of the Minnesota State Bird. Each&nbsp;woven&nbsp;loop&nbsp;corresponds to a different population of Minnesota and serves as a kind of timeline, mapping their&nbsp;migration to the state.
