When Pittsburg native Allen\nCanzonieri enrolled at Dunwoody, he already had more life and career experience\nthan most professionals do after a decade in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Veteran, he joined the Army at 17 and served in the cavalry for eight years, completing two tours in Iraq before being medically separated and moving back home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With his Army career behind\nhim, he enrolled in college with the idea of taking pre-med classes and\nbecoming an orthopedic surgeon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI swiftly realized that wasn\u2019t\nin the cards,\u201d he said. \u201cSo after that I worked a couple of dead-end jobs selling\nconstruction, trucks, and RVs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was also back in Pittsburg\nwhen Canzonieri met his wife Paige, then a product engineer for Eaton\nCorporation, whose job would move the couple around before finally landing in\nthe Twin Cities in 2016. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now an Automation Manufacturing\nEngineer for CommScope, she would also be the one who would encourage him to\nexplore a career in engineering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new path forward<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

So he enrolled at a local\ncommunity technical college and earned an Associate in Applied Science in Fluid\nPower Engineering and Motion Control. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As he was finishing up the program he came to the realization that while he didn\u2019t want to be a hydraulic engineer, he did want to get his bachelor\u2019s degree in engineering. And that\u2019s when he discovered Dunwoody\u2019s +2 Bachelor\u2019s of Science in Industrial Engineering Technology<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI chose the program because I\ncould get an engineering degree without going through another four years of\ncollege,\u201d he said. \u201cPlus, the facilities [at Dunwoody] are phenomenal. I was\nquite taken aback on how industry current the facilities are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the decision made,\nCanzonieri enrolled and started classes in the fall of 2019. He worked full\ntime and took six classes a semester. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the heavy work and school commitment, he managed to finish on time, graduate Magna Cum Laude, and earn the Academic Excellence Award for the School of Engineering<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe classes just all seemed to\nmake sense to me,\u201d he said. \u201cThe way information was presented clicked with\nme.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also walked away with a\ncareer that he loves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Project management<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Canzonieri accepted as a position as a Project Field Engineer for Adolfson & Peterson Construction and is currently working on a construction site, monitoring progress, timelines, and materials.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love it,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m\nworking on an 18 story build in Edina and it\u2019s one of the prettiest buildings\nI\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d  Adding that the program\nreally prepared him for the work he is doing now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA lot of the stuff we did\nrevolved around project management and mechanical engineering, and I discovered\nI really enjoyed seeing a project from inception to completion,\u201d he said.  \u201cI like taking an idea and turning it into a\nfinished project \u2014 and doing it all on time and on budget.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That model of going from\nideation to creation was built into the program, and one project he said he really\nenjoyed was in his Engineering Economic Analysis class, which had each student\ncreate a product or service and then complete a full financial analysis to\ndetermine its in-market feasibility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also took it as an\nopportunity to solve a problem he\u2019s dealt with in his own life. \u201cI wanted to\ndesign an ATV ramp for the bed of a truck that would hold a side-by-side, but\nthat could also be disassembled.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That type of portable ramp\nwould allow ATVers to camp in one location with their fifth-wheel or travel\ntrailer, but still haul their ATV out to trails in another location. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to determine the\nproduct\u2019s feasibility, he had to first design the product in SolidWorks and\ndetermine if it was structurally sound. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI ended up designing three\ndifferent variations,\u201d he said. But the project didn\u2019t stop there. Canzonieri\nhad to also calculate the cost of materials, assembly facility rental,\nwarehousing, and tools and equipment needed to produce the product. He then\nlooked at bank rates and completed a market analysis to see if the demand was\nthere \u2014 it was.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while he doesn\u2019t have any\nplans to start producing his design, he said he really enjoyed the entire\nprocess involved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A support network<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Throughout his education,\nCanzonieri said he felt supported by the faculty, even when everything had to\nswitch to online due to COVID. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thought the faculty did an\namazing job adapting \u2014 providing the value of education we expected and\ndemanded,\u201d he said. \u201cMy experience at Dunwoody has been far more positive than\nother post-secondary experiences. Faculty engage with the students. They know\ntheir names. There is no lack of support at Dunwoody.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the ticking\nexpiration date of his VA education funds, Canzonieri said his wife was the one\nwho always inspired him to stay motivated during his time at Dunwoody.  She also helped him  regain his math skills, after waiting 10\nyears between high school and college. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking back, the new Dunwoody\ngrad said one of the biggest lessons he will carry with him is how he\napproaches problems and solutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI learned to be more\nopen-minded when looking at stuff,\u201d he said. \u201cEven if something looks good \u2014 it\ncan still be improved.
