Alex Alvarado, Electrical Construction & Maintenance<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When Alex Alvarado was a sophomore in high school he asked\nhis father for advice on choosing a college. A veteran of the construction\nindustry himself, Alvarado\u2019s father didn\u2019t hesitate to encourage him to pursue a\ncareer in the trades. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI liked that idea,\u201d Alvarado said. And after taking a\ncareer interest survey, it was Dunwoody that showed up as a top school to\nconsider. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDunwoody seemed to have a lot more than most trade\nschools,\u201d he said. \u201cIt seemed like a place that could really help me get to\nwhere I want to be.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By this time, Alvarado had also decided to pursue a career as an electrician and decided to apply for the Electrical Construction & Maintenance<\/a> program at Dunwoody.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An early interest<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Growing up in Northeast Minneapolis, Alvarado spent time\nwatching his father in the industry and developed an interest in wiring and\nelectricity.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always been good at puzzles and electricity is like a\nbig puzzle,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m amazed at how much I enjoy figuring things out. I\nreally like building stuff with my hands. That\u2019s why I chose Dunwoody. You\u2019re\nnot just learning stuff from a textbook, but you get to experiment and try\nthings out.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Alvarado first started at Dunwoody, he thought he would\nbe learning to wire light fixtures and outlets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI found out that what I thought before only scratched the\nsurface,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s way better than I thought it would be. There are so\nmany little things and everything matches. Just the logic of it, how it works,\nhow you can check your answer and figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CCP Scholarship opens path<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Alvarado heard about the Construction Career Pathway (CCP) Scholarship program through his admissions counselor and was encouraged to apply after speaking with Peggy Quam, the Associate Director of Special Initiatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Receiving the scholarship allowed Alvarado to attend\nDunwoody, and the mentoring piece of the program has given him better insight\ninto the career path he has chosen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHaving a mentor is a great opportunity,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s in\nthe same career so he knows what I\u2019m doing.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exploring his options<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Alvarado is still considering all of his career options,\nincluding if he wants to join the union. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But in the meantime, he\u2019s enjoying his classes, especially\nhis on-campus lab. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo far the classes have been great. They\u2019re fun \u2013 and\ncomplicated,\u201d Alvarado said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And attending Dunwoody wouldn\u2019t have been possible without the CCP Scholarship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been a very big help,\u201d he said. \u201cI originally did not\nwant to take out any loans \u2013 now I don\u2019t have to. The scholarship has been a\nhuge opportunity and allowed me to come here. I\u2019m definitely very grateful for\nthis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alvarado\u2019s dad was also pretty excited about his son\u2019s\ncareer choice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe\u2019s excited that I have a plan, and that I know what I want to do and I\u2019m not aimlessly going through college,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m happy that I found a college that I really do like and that I\u2019m doing something that I like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
