Her involvement in everything from the Youth Career Awareness Program (YCAP), to Kate\u2019s Club to the Festival of Cultures, is the reason she was selected for this year\u2019s Diversity &amp; Inclusion Award.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/96_LizRivas_Dunwoody-Students-Volunteer-at-Jeremiah-Program-11292018-kmh-2-729x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Liz Rivas, right, along with Maggie Whitman, left, associate director of Women's Initiatives, volunteer their time at the Jeremiah Program. \" class=\"wp-image-5679\" width=\"491\" height=\"688\"\/><figcaption>Maggie Whitman, associate director of Women&#8217;s Initiatives, left, and Liz Rivas, right, volunteer at Jeremiah Program.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Choosing Dunwoody<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing up in Willmar Minnesota, Rivas didn\u2019t know too much about Dunwoody until she got an invitation from the College to apply for the YCAP scholarship. And it wasn\u2019t until she decided to tour the College that she really became interested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeggy [Quam] offered to give me a tour, and it really got my attention once I took a look around,\u201d Rivas said. \u201cI thought it was really nice of her to take the time to show me what Dunwoody is like. I just felt like she really wanted me there, and that\u2019s how it started.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivas had taken PSEO classes during her junior and senior year of high school and always knew she wanted to do something with her hands.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to be an auto mechanic at first,\u201d Rivas said. \u201cIn high school I took small engines and advanced small engines classes. And even in my spare time I would watch my stepdad fix cars and I got interested. He taught me a lot of things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Rivas also enjoyed learning about SolidWorks and when she took a digital electronics and Intro to Engineering class, her interest turned to Mechanical Engineering.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>I joined First Robotics in high school as well, and it really made me want to it as a career,\u201d Rivas said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Taking Advantage of Opportunities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Rivas first started at Dunwoody she was quiet, shy, and didn\u2019t want to ask for help. As a result, Rivas said she often felt lost, alone, and frustrated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSomething changed in me during my second year,\u201d Rivas said. \u201cI just got tired of it and decided that I was going to ask questions during class and go to my instructors\u2019 offices. I got more comfortable when I saw that they were really glad I stopped by and asked for help. They never said they were too busy. They\u2019d just stop what they were doing and say, \u2018Yes, of course I\u2019ll help you.\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From there Rivas started taking advantage of other opportunities at the College. She joined Kate\u2019s Club, which gave her the opportunity to talk with other female students and see what their experience is like.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the only female in her cohort of Mechanical Engineering students, part of the second class that will graduate from the program, and a first-generation college student, Rivas is finding multiple ways to connect with peers at the College.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"468\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/96_Liz_Rivas_Women-in-Engineering-02062019-kmh-2-1024x468.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/96_Liz_Rivas_Women-in-Engineering-02062019-kmh-2-1024x468.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/96_Liz_Rivas_Women-in-Engineering-02062019-kmh-2-300x137.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/96_Liz_Rivas_Women-in-Engineering-02062019-kmh-2-768x351.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/96_Liz_Rivas_Women-in-Engineering-02062019-kmh-2-1536x702.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/96_Liz_Rivas_Women-in-Engineering-02062019-kmh-2-1200x548.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/96_Liz_Rivas_Women-in-Engineering-02062019-kmh-2.jpg 1767w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Liz Rivas,left,  participates in the first Society of Women Engineers meeting, a newly formed club on campus.  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope I can inspire other females to join the field,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivas became a Student Ambassador, which allows her to meet with prospective students during Open Houses and learn why they are considering Dunwoody.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something that I never thought I would be doing,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m not a talkative person, but I just went for it. Just to make a change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The change was a good one. And one that led to other opportunities as well. I know who I can talk to if I\u2019m struggling with something or if I have a question. I just like the tight-knit community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivas has found community in her Mechanical Engineering program as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s different at Dunwoody because everyone there is doing Mechanical Engineering,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re interested in the subject and they want to learn. It\u2019s helpful just being in that environment versus a larger group where you\u2019re not really noticed by an instructor. The instructors here at Dunwoody are always keeping us involved, asking us questions, and pausing during a lecture. And a couple of times at the end of a semester we would do a roundtable discussion, with all of the Mechanical Engineering instructors and the Dean, to get our input. What should change, what we liked about the course \u2013 and they made those changes. It\u2019s during those times that Rivas turned to her boyfriend for inspiration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne thing he tells me over and over again is that if you have something in your mind that you want to do, you need to go for it,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s no time to overthink and worry about failure. You just need to go for it and see how it goes. Or you\u2019ll spend most of your time wishing and dreaming of what could have happened.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working on hands-on projects during the year has also allowed Rivas to explore the things that interest her the most. This past year, she spent time designing and building a mechanical arm that is used to move turtles from an aquarium without having to handle them by hand.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>I designed it completely from scratch,\u201d she said. \u201cI was able to go through that whole process of modeling it on the computer, and picking what materials to use. It narrowed my interests of what I want to do after I graduate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"padding:56.25% 0 0 0;position:relative;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/392865703?color=AC182E&#038;title=0&#038;byline=0&#038;portrait=0\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><script src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/api\/player.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivas still has one more year to complete before she graduates, but she\u2019s already looking ahead to her future.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just hope that I\u2019m a good teammate,\u201d she said. \u201cI think that when there is a project where you work with different people, I just want to make a good contribution to that team, to that project.
