Mechanical Engineering student part of first graduating class<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tommy Dao has never concentrated on the things he didn\u2019t\nhave \u2013 instead he\u2019s made the most of every opportunity that has come his way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In just a couple short months Dao will join the small group\nof students who will become the first graduating class from Dunwoody\u2019s\nMechanical Engineering program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But for Dao, the journey to graduation started long before\nhis freshman year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fixer of the\nfamily<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reaching high and working toward a goal is something Dao saw\nmodeled growing up. Both of his parents grew up in Vietnam and had no\nexperience with formal education. But even with a language barrier and no\nformal degrees, Dao\u2019s parents came to America, started their own landscaping\nbusiness, and raised a family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven without that, they became entrepreneurs,\u201d Dao said. \u201cI\nuse them as role-models. They were able to support four kids, run a business,\nand own a home in a country they didn\u2019t come from. So I think, \u2018of course\u2019 I\ncan do that. I already have all those advantages.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dao became involved with the family business at a young age.\nBy the time he turned 12, he was the one in charge of all the equipment\nmaintenance and repairs. Most of the time, that meant taking things apart,\nfiguring out how they worked, and trying to find a solution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dao remembers taking regular trips to the shop to find\nsomeone with experience who could explain how something worked. \u201cIt was\nfascinating to me to see how different parts of a machine contribute to its functions\nand failures \u2013 and maybe what design changes could have made it better,\u201d he\nsaid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experience was the perfect training ground for what\nwould be his future career path, a realization he didn\u2019t come to until after\nhigh school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making the switch to\nEngineering<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI never really thought about going into engineering until\nafter high school,\u201d Dao said. \u201cBut then I started thinking about what was I\ngood at and what I enjoy doing. And I enjoyed taking things apart and making\nthem better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Blaine High School graduate had a lot of friends who\nwent to Dunwoody, but he also knew he wanted a four-year degree. At the time,\nDunwoody only offered two-year programs in the fields he was interested in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So after visiting the campus and doing some research, Dao\napplied for and was accepted into the College\u2019s Engineering Drafting &\nDesign program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It wasn\u2019t long into his first year when Dao heard that the\nCollege was launching a new Mechanical Engineering program in Fall 2016. After\ntalking with faculty, Dao decided to make the switch.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pioneers <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being in the first engineering class has come with its share\nof advantages \u2013 and challenges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere is a problem-solving component to being the first\nclass,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite some of the challenges, Dao said the Dunwoody\nculture has really helped him succeed throughout the program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the small class sizes and the involvement with the\ninstructors,\u201d he said. \u201cIf the faculty senses that you are struggling, they\nwill approach you and see if they can help. They encourage you to meet with\nthem one-on-one to clarify a topic you don\u2019t understand to better prepare you for\nquizzes or exams.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Real world projects<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning through hands-on projects has been a great\nexperience for Dao and his favorite project also happens to be his senior\ncapstone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is part of a team of four students that is working with\nan outside company to modify and improve a piece of industrial construction\nequipment. Details of the project are confidential since they involve\nproprietary information, but the engineering process behind the project is\nsomething Dao has enjoyed from start to finish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It began last fall, when Dao along with Angela Freeland, Daniel\nHurd, and Benjamin Larsen, were presented with the problem and asked to\nredesign a machine to fit a new purpose. To do that, Dao and his teammates\nbegan with the design phase, working with the client to build out the specifics\nof what the redesigned machine was supposed to do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This semester, the team is now in the build process, which\nhas included prototyping, followed by part design and manufacturing. Dao has\neven learned new welding skills to help with the build. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI enjoy working on stuff with my hands. Ripping things\napart, creating and making new things,\u201d Dao said. \u201cThis has been my favorite\nproject because it has been the most involved. We get to work on something from\nstart to finish.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An entrepreneurial\nspirit<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designing and building things isn\u2019t something Dao just gets\nto do in class either. He is already following in his parents\u2019 footsteps and\nhas started his own business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Called GRIT Engineering, Dao has partnered with his brother\u2019s\nconstruction business to design and develop the metalwork used in building\nprojects. So far, Dao has designed and produced custom balconies, staircases,\nand cantilevers for residential homes and is currently working on a commercial\nproject for a salon.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going really well and we want to expand into more\ncontemporary household finishes,\u201d Dao said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to pursuing a full-time engineering job after\ngraduation and running GRIT Engineering, Dao is already thinking of ways to\ngive back and help other young people explore the world of engineering. He has\nbegun exploring ideas for starting up an educational program for K-12 that\nwould use hands-on projects to teach students about engineering practices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to help kids get exposed to these things at a\nyounger age,\u201d Dao said, adding that he is even thinking about designing and\nbuilding some \u201ckid-safe\u201d machines they could use. \u201cWhen I was growing up I\ndidn\u2019t get introduced to this type of equipment and machines until a later\nage.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This May, Dao will become the first one in his family to\ngraduate from college \u2013 an accomplishment he said his parents are a bit\noverwhelmed by. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor a lot of families who come over here, education is a\nbig part,\u201d he said. \u201cThey want their kids to compete with everyone else and not\nbe at a disadvantage.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Dao is excited about what the future holds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m excited to apply what I have learned here,\u201d he said.\n\u201cI\u2019ve learned more here than anywhere else in my entire life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI also want to be able to make a difference and make\nchanges in the world so I can pay forward what I have achieved here. I believe\nthat you don\u2019t forget those who have been there for you when all you had to\noffer was your presence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dao also encourages others to consider a career in\nengineering, pointing to his own experience. \u201cI grew up in a family that didn\u2019t\nexperience formal education. If this is something you want to do, and that you\nenjoy, set your mind to it, and allow yourself to grow.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
