Mia Troska is considering a degree in either Construction Management or Electrical Construction Design & Management. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Mia Troska has always had a strong work ethic and a passion\nfor learning new things. And with her interest in practical, concrete skills\nand task, it\u2019s easy to see why she believes a Dunwoody education will be a\ngreat fit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI like learning with a purpose,\u201d Troska said. \u201cA four-year\nliberal arts college wasn\u2019t going to be the best option for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Centennial High School student first discovered Dunwoody\nduring her sophomore year. It was during that visit that she met Construction\nProject Management Program Manager Heather Gay, who set up a day-long job\nshadow for Troska at McGough Construction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI particularly liked the time I spent with an estimator and\nthat increased my interest in attending Dunwoody,\u201d Troska said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, she took another step and attended Dunwoody Visit\nDay, which allowed her to experience what a Dunwoody education is all about. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy visit day cemented Dunwoody as my first choice,\u201d Troska\nsaid. \u201cI liked the diversity and varied ages of the students I saw. Small class\nsizes will be a plus for the hand-on learning part of my education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A plan for her future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Troska may be a year away from starting college, but she is\nalready thinking about her future. It\u2019s one of the reasons she is considering a\ndegree in either Construction Management or Electrical Construction Design\n& Management. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m hard working and self-motivated,\u201d she said. \u201cHaving a\njob since age 14 and earning my own money not only gives me a sense of\naccomplishment, I also really enjoy working and meeting people from outside my\ndaily high school life. I am pretty independent and the idea of being well\nprepared to start a career just two years after graduating high school is very\nexciting.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as a 4.0 student, captain of the varsity tennis team, a\npeer leader, National Honor Society student, and a member of her high school\u2019s\nspeech team, Troska has done her homework. She knows that graduates from the\nconstruction and electrical fields are in high demand, and will offer her\nimmediate placement and great paying positions with advancement opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also knows that she can then continue on and earn her\nbachelor\u2019s degree, while working in the field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And working while attending school is nothing new for\nTroska. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has already had several jobs, beginning with her first\nposition as a caddy when she was 14 years old. Since then she has worked at a\ndry cleaners and now works a concession stand at a local park. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The YCAP summer\nexperience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since Troska knew she would need financial assistance to\nattend Dunwoody, she decided to apply for the Youth Career Awareness Program\n(YCAP) scholarship. The scholarship program, which works to enhance career\nopportunities for under-represented youth and encourages them to earn a degree\nfrom Dunwoody, includes a four-week summer experience at the College.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experience has allowed Troska to learn about different\ncareer fields, tour industry employers, and participate in hands-on activities.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBesides the very generous scholarship, I plan to take full\nadvantage of the mentorship and workshop opportunities to become even better\nprepared to start a career in the construction industry,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she enters her senior year of high school, Troska is\nplanning to take advantage of her high school\u2019s Post Secondary Enrollment\nOptions, so she can start earning college credits before she graduates and\nenrolls at Dunwoody. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
