Summer program reaffirms future career path<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Mark Velez\nfirst heard about Dunwoody from his cousin, a recent graduate of the HVAC\nprogram. Velez was intrigued by what he heard because he wants to become a\nmaster electrician so last fall he stopped by one of the College’s monthly open\nhouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A junior at\nCristo Rey Jesuit High School at the time, Velez liked what he saw, but even\nthough he was still more than a year away from college, he was worried about\nhow he’d pay for it. Luckily, he’s a thorough kind of guy. As he visited all\nthe tables at the open house, he came upon the one promoting the Youth Career Awareness\nProgram, which works to enhance the career opportunities of under-represented\nyouth and encourage them to earn a degree from Dunwoody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I got\nexcited,” he said. “I went home and started working on the\napplication.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Velez\nfamily’s connection to construction goes back to his grandfather who was an\nelectrician for a power plant in Ecuador. His father learned the basics of\nelectrical construction from his grandfather but didn’t have the opportunity to\nattend college. He eventually immigrated to the United States and worked a\nseries of construction jobs in New York City. He later moved to Minneapolis and\nestablished himself as a general contractor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Velez grew\nup helping his father out — passing him a tool or holding something in place\n— and as he got older his interest in the field grew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I\nfigured an electrician is something that’s going to be needed anywhere and\neverywhere all the time,” Velez said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He’s\nexcited and grateful for the opportunity to get the formal training and college\ndegree that his father wasn’t able to have. In fact, his enthusiasm for the\nprogram was so infectious that his brother-in-law enrolled in the electrical program\nthis past academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And YCAP\u2019s\nsummer experience has matched his enthusiasm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s\nbeen great,” he said. “Every day I go home, I find myself talking\nabout YCAP without my parents even asking me. They introduce you to so many\ndifferent things — new information, different fields.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it’s\nmade him much more comfortable with the idea of going to college — Dunwoody,\nin particular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“YCAP\nhas allowed me to have the experience of the school without being enrolled.\nCome out, see the campus, feel the environment,\u201d he said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Velez still\nneeds to finish his senior year of high school, but he’s planning to apply to\nthe Electrical Construction & Maintenance program this fall. Of course, he\nalready knew that\u2019s what he wanted to do. But YCAP has only increased his\nconfidence in that plan, and the scholarship that comes with the program will\nmake it possible.   <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
