Electrical Construction & Maintenance Assistant Professor Polly Friendshuh passes on her passion for the industry<\/h3>\n

Polly Friendshuh knows what it\u2019s like to take the path less traveled. And she has often been the one leading the journey.<\/p>\n

While growing up in Bloomington, Friendshuh had always planned to be an engineer. Her aptitude for math and science combined with the encouragement of her father made the decision an easy one. She enrolled at the University of Minnesota-Duluth right after high school.<\/p>\n

But life took a different turn when she got pregnant, married, and decided to leave school. A few years later, Friendshuh found herself a divorced mom raising two young children with no way to support her family. It was position she was determined to never be in again.<\/p>\n

With that in mind, Friendshuh enrolled at the University of Minnesota as an electrical engineering major. The next year and a half was a struggle, and the combination of schooling and small children led Friendshuh to seek a change. She took the summer off and decided to find a quicker path to a good paying career.<\/p>\n

Choosing a technical degree<\/h5>\n

When Friendshuh decided to pursue an electrical construction degree, she first looked at Dunwoody, but the program had a three-year wait list at the time. It was time she didn\u2019t have. So Friendshuh enrolled at Minneapolis Community Technical College for electrical construction.<\/p>\n

After spending a year in the program, Friendshuh applied to the Union and was accepted, becoming the 11th<\/sup> woman in an industry with 2,500 members. In fact, it wasn\u2019t until five years into her career that she encountered another woman working on the same job site.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have some horror stories, and I have some fabulous stories,\u201d Friendshuh said about her early-career experiences. But she eventually discovered that there is a place for everyone in the field.<\/p>\n

Friendshuh recalls one electrician who provided the support she needed when first starting out.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe helped me tremendously,\u201d she said. \u201cHe was very encouraging and told me not to quit and to prove them all wrong. He was one of those people in my professional career who made it possible to flourish in this industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Friendshuh eventually became a licensed journeyworker electrician, mainly in the commercial industrial arena, before working her way up to project management.<\/p>\n

Over the years, Friendshuh\u2019s career path has opened doors and provided opportunities to work on a vast number of interesting projects, including the Twin Cities\u2019 light rail system.<\/p>\n

After the light rail project Friendshuh took a position in construction services for the University of Minnesota. By this time, Friendshuh had remarried and was working as a foreman for the University when her husband saw the job opening for an electrical instructor at Dunwoody and encouraged her to apply.<\/p>\n

From the job site to the classroom<\/h5>\n

Now an Electrical Construction & Maintenance Assistant Professor, Friendshuh said teaching wasn\u2019t something she had ever imagined doing, but it is something she has come to love.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had never thought about teaching before,\u201d she said. \u201cI thought about going into project management because I really enjoyed working in the field. There was always something new every day, and you are never bored.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTeaching is like that. There are new students every semester. And I still love the industry. It is ever changing. And teaching gives me the opportunity to help the students learn and grow and then go out into the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

And for Friendshuh her connection with her students doesn\u2019t end at graduation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remain connected with a lot of my students, and I get to see them start their lives,\u201d she said. \u201cI go to weddings and get sent baby pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing part of the industry, you see the impact you have on the community when you can point to a building and say \u2018I helped create that.\u2019 With students, it\u2019s how you help develop them into professionals. It\u2019s the same sense of satisfaction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Friendshuh has also maintained her love of learning, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Career and Technical Education from the University of Minnesota, an MBA from Concordia University and a Master Electrician license from the State of Minnesota. She also keeps up-to-date on all of the current electrical codes, which change every three years.<\/p>\n

\"\"And while women have made great strides in the industry since Friendshuh joined more than 30 years ago, she acknowledges that there is still room for improvement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need more women,\u201d she said. \u201cThe career is full of opportunities for women. It provided me a good life and a way to support my children. And I made the same amount of money as the men.\u201d<\/p>\n

When she looks to the future, Friendshuh is excited for the industry, including the opportunities in solar and renewable energies.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an awesome field,\u201d she said. \u201cI can drive around town and point to all of the places and projects I worked on that are a part of our community. How many people can say that?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
