{"id":4444,"date":"2019-02-15T15:21:23","date_gmt":"2019-02-15T21:21:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/?p=4444"},"modified":"2019-04-11T12:38:51","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T17:38:51","slug":"dunwoody-snow-plow-teams-earn-first-third-place-at-autonomous-snowplow-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/2019\/dunwoody-snow-plow-teams-earn-first-third-place-at-autonomous-snowplow-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Dunwoody Snow Plow teams earn first, third place at Autonomous Snowplow Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Dunwoody students receive sportsmanship award fifth year in a row<\/strong><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Dunwoody students welcomed the cold temperatures and falling snow once again this past January as students competed in the ninth annual <a href=\"http:\/\/autosnowplow.com\/welcome.html\">Institute of Navigation (ION\u2019s) Autonomous Snowplow Competition.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The yearly event serves as an opportunity for universities, colleges, and the general public to showcase hand-built machines that can independently clear piles of snow without any manual control.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dunwoody College of Technology Robotic Snow Plow Teams Win\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/317556958?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The College has competed in the competition since its inauguration in 2011 and has <a href=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/?s=snowplow\">a history of placing well<\/a> \u2014 with 2019 being no different.\u00a0 <strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This year, not only did students receive the Golden Smile sportsmanship award for the fifth year in a row,<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4447\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4447\" style=\"width: 444px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4447\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Snow-Plow-Team-10012018-kmh-1-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"444\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Snow-Plow-Team-10012018-kmh-1-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Snow-Plow-Team-10012018-kmh-1-768x519.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Snow-Plow-Team-10012018-kmh-1-1024x692.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Snow-Plow-Team-10012018-kmh-1.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4447\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of Dunwoody&#8217;s Snow Plow team gear up for the season.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>they also swept the competition with a first-place and third-place win. First-place went to Dunwoody\u2019s \u201cWendigo 2019\u201d snowplow and third-place went to the College\u2019s \u201cSnow Devils 10012\u201d snowplow.<\/p>\n<p>Robotics &amp; Manufacturing Dean and team coordinator E.J. Daigle said this year has been the team\u2019s most successful year yet \u2014 both in terms of placement and program-diversity. The 2019 team featured students from four of the College\u2019s programs: Automated Systems &amp; Robotics, Electronics Engineering Technology, Software Engineering, and Industrial Engineering Technology.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dunwoody College Snow Devil Snow Plow team\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/317559150?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Snowplow team adds value to students\u2019 education <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>A rapidly growing student club, Dunwoody\u2019s snow plow teams have served as a selling point for many students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI visited Dunwoody for the first time during an Open House,\u201d Electronics Engineering Technology student Nick Bornt explained. \u201cAnd during a tour I was shown the snow plows. I knew from the moment I saw them that I wanted to be on the team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Software Engineering student Abraham Huerta agreed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard about the team, and once I saw the work they were doing \u2014 I knew I wanted to be a part of that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The teams have been working on their snowplows since early September. Weekly team meetings included time spent studying, building, and testing the machines.<\/p>\n<p>Huerta said the experience has been incredible and one he likely wouldn\u2019t have gotten inside a classroom.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4449\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4449\" style=\"width: 427px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4449\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Snow-Plow-Team-10012018-kmh-2-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Snow-Plow-Team-10012018-kmh-2-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Snow-Plow-Team-10012018-kmh-2-768x540.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Snow-Plow-Team-10012018-kmh-2-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Snow-Plow-Team-10012018-kmh-2.jpg 1375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4449\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of Dunwoody&#8217;s Snow Plow team gear up for the season.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBeing a part of the team gives you an opportunity to work with cutting edge technology \u2014 things that tech\u00a0companies are still working on,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was really cool to use autonomous navigating technology and see exactly where it\u2019s headed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the team members will also be the first to tell you that despite months of learning about the technology, the machines still surprise you. During the final run of the 2019 competition, the Wendigo team experienced unexpected technical difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pushed the start button and it did nothing,\u201d Bornt said. \u201cTurns out that some component of our main controller got too cold and decided to not work when we needed it the most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, Bornt explained, Software Engineering student Donald Posterick was able to modify the code on the team\u2019s secondary controller. His quick thinking allowed the team to still compete in \u2013 and eventually win \u2014 the competition.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>2019 competition debuts new venue <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4451\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/20190126_092523-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"421\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/20190126_092523-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/20190126_092523-768x547.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/20190126_092523-1024x730.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/20190126_092523.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 421px) 100vw, 421px\" \/>A new competition venue also added value to the students\u2019 experience this year.<\/p>\n<p>In previous years, the annual event has been held during the St. Paul Winter Carnival at Rice Park, here in Minnesota. But construction delays within the park forced the competition to be moved elsewhere. That\u2019s when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sidewalklabs.com\/\">Sidewalk Labs<\/a>, an Alphabet Inc.\u2019s urban innovation organization, offered a new, snowy destination: Toronto, Ontario, Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSidewalk Labs was given a tract of land by the city of Toronto to develop a model of the future city,\u201d Daigle explained, adding that the city would include new models for pavement, building construction, traffic control, garbage removal, and \u2014 you guessed it \u2014 snow removal. \u201cIt was the perfect place to showcase autonomous snow plows,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ten Dunwoody students and three faculty members were able to make the trek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCanada was the perfect place to host the competition,\u201d Huerta said. \u201cToronto is really pushing to get autonomous vehicles and robots integrated into their city. It was great to see a place where our robots could end up someday. It made our ideas and concepts feel a lot closer to becoming a reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And while seeing a new country <em>and<\/em> winning the top prize in the competition were highlights in themselves, Dunwoody students found greater fulfilment in once again receiving the competition\u2019s sportsmanship award.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dunwoody College Snow Devil Snow Plow team -Hayley LaZarre\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/317559214?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Students make helping others yearly mission <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Created by ION in 2012, the annual award is presented to a team that exhibits notable sportspersonship throughout the competition.<\/p>\n<p>The award was later named the Dr. Nattu Natarajan Golden Smile Award after University of Michigan-Dearborn professor and competition leader Dr. Narasimhamurthi (Nattu) Natarajan. Nattu passed away from a lung illness on the Saturday morning of the 2016 competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sportsmanship award is an award we strive to get every year,\u201d Huerta said. \u201cNot because we want awards, but simply because we love to work together with other schools and help them as much as we can.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4453\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/FB_IMG_1548646752188-300x172.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"435\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/FB_IMG_1548646752188-300x172.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/FB_IMG_1548646752188-768x441.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/FB_IMG_1548646752188-1024x588.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/FB_IMG_1548646752188.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe worst thing that can happen at the competition is to spend all year working on your robot and travel all the that way only to have the robot\u00a0not work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daigle credits the team\u2019s open communication and volunteerism as reasons for receiving the award again this year, explaining that they were quick to share tips with other teams, lend tools, and even shovel snow due to the lack of event helpers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy far my favorite part of the event was seeing our students working with the other teams to overcome challenges and help ensure the competition was a success,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dunwoody College Snow Devil Snow Plow team 2 -Hayley LaZarre\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/317559236?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The team hopes to receive the award again in 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dunwoody students receive sportsmanship award fifth year in a row Dunwoody students welcomed the cold temperatures and falling snow once again this past January as students competed in the ninth annual Institute of Navigation (ION\u2019s) Autonomous Snowplow Competition.
