I also wanted them to have their piece designed with a story and connection to animals in mind,\u201d Wiesner said, highlighting the importance of conceptual design.<\/p>\n<p>Having a background story behind their piece is important. \u201cIt makes it personal,\u201d Kerrik Wessel said. \u201cTranslating the story into something concrete is an important skill to have.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5>Students draw from varied experiences for project direction<\/h5>\n<p>Despite hearing the same project pitch, students took their projects in very different directions. They made a lot of different patterns and led you from a space of dark to light,\u201d he said. In his stainless-steel design, Rastall made it so the zoo guests are guided by light to the animal enclosure.<\/p>\n<p>Third-year student Tanner Konen thought back to memories of seeing tigers\u2019 pace at the zoo. He wanted something that was natural and functional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went with bamboo for my enclosure. Bamboo made sense to use given the environment red pandas live in,\u201d Konen said. Through use of these materials, Konen was able to incorporate elements of modular design into his project as well.<\/p>\n<h5>Real-world assignments advance professional skills<\/h5>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4410\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4410\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4410\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_7956-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Student Tanner Konen showing a 3D rendering of some of his design\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_7956-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_7956-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/IMG_7956-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4410\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Student Tanner Konen showing a 3D rendering of some of his design<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While exploring the use of different building materials, students also experimented with 3D rendering and modeling. Konen, who currently works as a 3D designer, found the experience extremely useful in his professional life.<\/p>\n<p>Through working conceptually in a hands-on environment, students like Rastall and Konen are groomed to become high-end professionals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents get marketable skills by their second year and get jobs,\u201d Wessel said. Through the Como Park project students expanded their portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>Wiesner stated that she was very impressed by the students work.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Como is working on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comozooconservatory.org\/news\/ground-breaking-ceremony-for-comos-seal-sea-lion-exhibit-june-7\/\"><em>Como Harbor project<\/em><\/a>. Following its completion, Como hopes to possibly use these student concepts as inspiration and future fund-raising tools to help expand the zoo\u2019s current infrastructure.
