That\u2019s how fourth-year Architecture student Josiah Hanka described his two-month study abroad stay in Barcelona, Spain. Hanka was part of a semester-long Dunwoody Study Abroad program this past spring.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3707 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/312145e3-8106-4b97-a30b-d83c80d0ca3a-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/312145e3-8106-4b97-a30b-d83c80d0ca3a.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/312145e3-8106-4b97-a30b-d83c80d0ca3a-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/312145e3-8106-4b97-a30b-d83c80d0ca3a-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/p>\n<h6><strong>Dunwoody launches first semester-long study abroad program<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>The program, a first for Dunwoody, consisted of ten Bachelor of Architecture students and lasted a full semester. The first half of the semester was spent in Minneapolis where students studied the history of Barcelona as it relates to design. The second half of the semester took place in Barcelona, where students stayed with host families.<\/p>\n<p>The Dunwoody group left for Spain on March 13, 2018, and the program concluded May 18, 2018. Faculty members Molly Reichert and Reem El-Radi led the venture.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Dunwoody students experience making in a new way<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3708 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG-5668-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"341\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG-5668-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG-5668-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG-5668-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG-5668-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG-5668.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px\" \/>While in Spain, the Dunwoody group had the unique and very fitting opportunity to take courses in a Spanish maker space located in the Poble Nou district of Barcelona, <a href=\"https:\/\/atta33.com\/\">ATTA33<\/a>. Much like at Dunwoody, here students had access to a full wood shop, CNC router, laser cutters, and 3D printers as well as fully trained, expert machinists and technicians.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3709\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/makerspace-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/makerspace-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/makerspace-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/makerspace-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving skilled technicians help students use the machines made the process of making so much easier,\u201d Reichert said. \u201cIt allowed the process of model making to be much more focused on design rather than troubleshooting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the students\u2019 favorite projects created at ATTA33 was the individual interpretation, design, and fabrication of Modernisme, a culturally rich building ornamentation found in many Spanish arts, especially architecture. The organic shapes, curves, floral motifs\u2014it\u2019s inspiring.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Architecture students grow, gain confidence on trip<\/strong><\/h6>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3717\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3717\" style=\"width: 325px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3717\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Student-Projects-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Student-Projects-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Student-Projects-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Student-Projects-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Student-Projects.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3717\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Several student projects inspired by Modernisme<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During their stay, students were paid a visit by Minneapolis developer and urbanist Michael Lander of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.landergroup.com\/\">Lander Group<\/a>. Lander led the students on a tour of Avinguda Diagonal, one of Barcelona\u2019s most significant avenues, to discuss the differences between Minneapolis and Barcelona urbanism and how the two cities might learn from one another.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3719 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG-5824-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG-5824-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG-5824-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG-5824-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG-5824-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG-5824.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The students were also able to tour Architecture firms <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mirallestagliabue.com\/\">EMBT Architects<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcrarquitectes.es\/\">RCR Architects<\/a> as well as several widely recognized spaces, including\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sagradafamilia.org\/en\/\">The Sagrada Familia<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boqueria.barcelona\/\">Mercado de La Boqueria<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.santamariadelmarbarcelona.org\/home\/\">Santa Maria del Mar<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archinect.com\/embt\/project\/santa-caterina-market\">Mercado de Santa Caterina<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ricardobofill.com\/projects\/walden-7-2\/\">Walden 7<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barcelona.de\/en\/barcelona-museum-maritim.html\">the Museu Maritim<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A few other favorite events for the Dunwoody students included taking a Spanish cooking class and celebrating the Festival of Sant Jordi (an annual event where the entire city is covered in books and roses).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3718 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_6374-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"327\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_6374-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_6374-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_6374-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_6374-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very clear to me what this trip did for students,\u201d Reichert said. \u201cThey developed and grew during their time there. Students told me the trip helped them gain confidence and provided them with a greater understanding of\u2014and appreciation for\u2014cultural differences. The students gained an understanding of design and urbanism in this new cultural context and now have an understanding of the impact of architecture and urban design on public life and our daily experience.
