{"id":3691,"date":"2018-06-07T11:51:34","date_gmt":"2018-06-07T16:51:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/?p=3691"},"modified":"2018-06-07T13:33:38","modified_gmt":"2018-06-07T18:33:38","slug":"innovation-award-2018-first-robotics-mn-state-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/2018\/innovation-award-2018-first-robotics-mn-state-championship\/","title":{"rendered":"Dunwoody rewards innovation at FIRST Robotics MN state championship"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Three high school teams receive $500 and the Dunwoody Unique Engineering &amp; Design Award for their FIRST Robotics competition design solutions<\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The Greenbush-Middle River, Eden Valley-Watkins, and Frazee-Vergas high school teams formed the winning alliance at this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mshsl.org\/mshsl\/robotics.asp\">Minnesota State High School League FIRST Robotics championship<\/a>\u00a0held May 19, at Mariucci Arena. But thanks to Dunwoody\u2019s Unique Engineering &amp; Design Award, teams that didn\u2019t place still had a chance to win.<\/p>\n<p>For the fourth consecutive year, Dunwoody presented a Unique Engineering &amp; Design Award, which recognizes high school robotics teams that exhibit unique engineering design solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Because each year\u2019s FIRST Robotics competition provides several different challenges and multiple ways to score points, teams have to make tough decisions about how they design their robots. No matter whether those decisions lead to a first place win or not, they provide team members with an opportunity to experiment, problem-solve, and learn.<\/p>\n<h6>Winners use unique materials methods<\/h6>\n<p>The 2018 Unique Engineering &amp; Design Award winners are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Becker, Team 4607 (Becker, MN)<\/li>\n<li>Henry Sibley, Team 3100 (Mendota Heights, MN)<\/li>\n<li>Farmington, Team 2987 (Farmington, MN)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-3691 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-large'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"269\" src=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/2018-FIRSTRobotics-Becker-Team4607-1024x475.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"Photo of Dean E.J. Daigle (far left) and Henry Sibley High School&#8217;s FIRST Robotics Team 3100\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Dean of Robotics &amp; Manufacturing E.J. Daigle was this year\u2019s judge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe winning teams this year designed and built robots using an array of design and custom-manufacturing parts for their robots,\u201d he said. \u201cMachining, welding, 3D-printing, and hand-laid carbon fiber were all on display. By far my favorite was seeing a Banner photoelectric sensor and reflector applied to a robot wheel to be utilized as an encoder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several <a href=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/manufacturing\/\">Dunwoody Robotics &amp; Manufacturing<\/a>\u00a0students also attended the event. They talked about their experiences at Dunwoody, made sure the Dunwoody keychain-dispensing FANUC robot\u2014an event favorite\u2014kept running properly, and showcased the College\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/2018\/students-compete-help-out-teams-at-autonomous-snowplow-competition\/\">\u201cSnow Devil\u201d robotic snow plow<\/a>\u00a0by driving it around the concourse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scholarships and seminars for FIRST Robotics participants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dunwoody hopes to give out the award again next year.<\/p>\n<p>The College is offering $1,000 scholarships to FIRST Robotics grads who enroll at Dunwoody for the fall 2018 semester.
