{"id":3460,"date":"2018-04-09T12:10:17","date_gmt":"2018-04-09T17:10:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dunwoody.edu\/blog\/?p=3460"},"modified":"2018-04-09T12:20:15","modified_gmt":"2018-04-09T17:20:15","slug":"five-dunwoody-students-place-in-2018-skillsusa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/2018\/five-dunwoody-students-place-in-2018-skillsusa\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Dunwoody students place in 2018 SkillsUSA State Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Two students advance to SkillsUSA Nationals.<\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Dunwoody College students performed well at the 2018 SkillsUSA State Competition late last month, bringing home two 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0place medals, two 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0place medals, and one 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0place medal.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3457 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Arch-Drafting-Awards.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Electrical Construction &amp; Maintenance student Matthew Longendyke placed first in the Related Technical Math competition; Architecture students Karla Schmitt, Garrett VanRoekel, and Helena Perez placed first, second, and third respectively in the Architectural Drafting competition; and Automotive Collision Repair &amp; Refinishing student Angel Paucar placed second in the Collision Repair competition.<\/p>\n<p>Automotive Collision Repair &amp; Refinishing students Tyler Thompson and Cody Huset, and Electrical Construction &amp; Maintenance students Michael Notch, Angela Arndt, and Andrew Prestegaard also competed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSkillsUSA competitions provide so many benefits for the students,\u201d Polly Friendshuh, SkillsUSA Coordinator and Competition Advisor, shared. \u201cIt\u2019s not just a resume builder, but it\u2019s also something that gives students a sense of pride and accomplishment.\u00a0It is a way for them to show off the skills they have learned.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Dunwoody heads to Nationals<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3458 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Competors-at-the-awards.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"342\" height=\"241\" \/>Both Longendyke and Schmitt will advance to the SkillsUSA Nationals Competition in Louisville, KY, this June. This will be Longendyke\u2019s second time competing nationally in the Related Technical Math contest. In 2017, he placed fourth overall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always enjoy watching students participate in their events,\u201d Friendshuh said. \u201cYou can literally see the nerves disappear when they are focusing on their projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am proud of each of our competitors in all the contests\u2014especially for just for putting themselves out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6><strong>SkillsUSA: a Dunwoody tradition<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Dunwoody has been proudly participating in SkillsUSA Minnesota for many years.<\/p>\n<p>The competition, which celebrated its 51<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary this year, aims to bring together students, teachers, and industry to ensure America has a skilled workforce.<\/p>\n<p>The College will participate again in the 2019 competition.<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in joining the 2019 SkillsUSA team, please contact Associate Director of Career Services Rob Borchardt at 612.381.3322 or\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:rborchardt@dunwoody.edu\">rborchardt@dunwoody.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two students advance to SkillsUSA Nationals.
