So how do we make sense out of that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3010\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_2644-1-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2644\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_2644-1-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_2644-1-768x498.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_2644-1-1024x664.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>If a career in magic\u2014or electricity\u2014seems abstract to you, you\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the students who come to talk to us about the Electrical Construction &amp; Maintenance program don\u2019t have an understanding of what the program really is,\u201d said Electrical Construction &amp; Maintenance Principal Instructor Steve Lee. \u201cThey have a picture in their head of wiring a house or doing some kind of small or large commercial project\u2014and that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there\u2019s more than that. It\u2019s troubleshooting, servicing, installation, and repair in any facet that you can think of where there is electricity. It\u2019s more than just the plug-ins and the lights you see in your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of those facets include electrical systems like renewable energy, solar power, elevators, batteries, fire alarms, and security.<\/p>\n<p>But finding an interest in electricity is only just the beginning. They work directly with architects and building owners to determine what kinds of electrical systems are logical and possible in a new or existing structure.<\/p>\n<p>Common job titles for program graduates include Electrical Designers, Electrical Estimators, and Electrical Project Managers. On average, these workers make about $54,300 annually and are typically employed at electrical contracting companies or engineering firms.<\/p>\n<p>Students who graduate from Dunwoody\u2019s Electrical Construction &amp; Maintenance take the proposals put forth by electrical designers and help make it happen. It\u2019s their job to ensure the submitted blueprints are up to code and that the proposed designs will actually work in the given space.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3005\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3005\" style=\"width: 191px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3005 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_2618-191x300.jpg\" alt=\"Dunwoody Electrical Construction &amp; Maintenance student practices residential wiring inside Dunwoody's onsite house\" width=\"191\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_2618-191x300.jpg 191w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_2618-768x1206.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_2618-652x1024.jpg 652w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 191px) 100vw, 191px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3005\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dunwoody Electrical Construction &amp; Maintenance student practices residential wiring inside Dunwoody&#8217;s onsite house<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Using their main tools of screwdrivers, benders, and wire cutters, these workers spend their days installing and maintaining electrical systems in a wide array of buildings, from residential to commercial to industrial and manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Graduates from this program go on to become Apprentice or Maintenance Electricians, which make, on average, $58,810 annually.*<\/p>\n<p>But, no matter the path, both electrical designers and electricians work hand-in-hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really two sides of the same blueprint,\u201d said Electrical Design &amp; Management Senior Instructor Nick Bohl. \u201cIt\u2019s just a matter of figuring out whether you want to be the person creating and designing the blue prints or if you want to be the person who brings it to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Choosing the right career path<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>But, sometimes that decision isn\u2019t always obvious\u2014especially for students right out of high school. That\u2019s why Dunwoody\u2019s electrical department is purposefully set-up so students in both the Electrical Construction Design &amp; Management and Electrical Construction &amp; Maintenance programs take the exact same classes their first year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3003 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0454-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Dunwoody Electrical Construction &amp; Maintenance student trains on actual equipment during lab time \" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0454-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0454-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0454-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This provides a chance for students who are interested in electrical systems\u2014but don\u2019t yet know what path they\u2019d like to take\u2014an opportunity to experience both professions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually when you go to college, you have to pick a major. And for someone right out of high school or someone relatively young, that\u2019s hard because you\u2019re looking at your future and thinking \u2018what do I do?\u2019\u201d Friendshuh said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the opportunity to experience both paths helps tremendously. It\u2019s a huge selling point of the programs for a lot of people, because students can come in, see both careers, and know they won\u2019t be stuck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The course schedule also provides students with another major benefit: the ability to complete both programs\u2014and earn both associate\u2019s degrees\u2014in just three years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unbelievable what opens up for you when you have got both the hands-on skills and the computer\/design skills,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3006\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3006\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3006 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1978-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Dunwoody Construction Management student verifying blueprints\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1978-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1978-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1978.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3006\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dunwoody Construction Management student verifying blueprints<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another career path available to both program graduates is in project management. <a href=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/construction\/construction-management\/\">Dunwoody\u2019s Construction Management<\/a> bachelor\u2019s completion degree allows students to transfer their two-year electrical degree directly into a four-year bachelors degree in Construction Management.<\/p>\n<p>Two additional years of schooling allows graduates to quickly move up in their given industries, taking on leadership roles such as Project Manager, Construction Manager, Estimator, or Construction Business Owner.<\/p>\n<p>As managers, graduates can expect to oversee the work of both the designers and the electricians. They develop building schedules and estimates, monitor build progress, and track construction costs to make sure the project gets done on time and within budget.<\/p>\n<p>The average annual salary for employees in these positions is around $90,470.*<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Dunwoody graduates in high demand <\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Graduates from all three programs are in high demand. If you want a job and you want options, this career path is it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bohl agreed: \u201cOur students hit the ground [running]. They come out of the program knowing not only the job but they have the experience, too,\u201d Bohl said.<\/p>\n<p>And employers know it.<\/p>\n<p>Recent graduates are working at companies like Egan Companies, Hunt Electric Corporation, Black &amp; Veatch, Cal-Tex Electric, Laketown Electric, Kimley-Horn &amp; Associates, Ryan Companies, Mortenson Construction, and with various local unions.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line? Dunwoody electrical programs provide students access to multiple career paths and the skills and knowledge to tackle any one of them.
