{"id":2089,"date":"2016-05-17T12:39:15","date_gmt":"2016-05-17T17:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dunwoody.edu\/blog\/?p=2089"},"modified":"2016-05-17T12:39:15","modified_gmt":"2016-05-17T17:39:15","slug":"surveying-civil-engineering-students-apply-gis-to-deliver-geospatial-solutions-on-smart-devices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/2016\/surveying-civil-engineering-students-apply-gis-to-deliver-geospatial-solutions-on-smart-devices\/","title":{"rendered":"Surveying &#038; Civil Engineering students apply GIS to deliver geospatial Solutions on Smart Devices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Surveying &amp; Civil Engineering Technology students presented their final projects earlier this week, demonstrating the unique ways Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can help people make location-based decisions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2095 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8628-small.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8628-small\" width=\"600\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8628-small.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8628-small-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Simply speaking, a GIS is a computer system that allows users to overlay different layers of information on a map to better see patterns and relationships at a given location.<\/p>\n<p>Instructor and Ramsey County GIS System Administrator Jessica Fendos helped develop Dunwoody\u2019s first Geospatial Technology curriculum, which teaches students how to make maps and publish GIS content to the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>Students were able to use this technology in their final projects to compile themed layers from a variety of sources, including U.S. census statistics, CAD drawings, GPS coordinates, satellite images, and multimedia data.<\/p>\n<p>Each group tackled a real-world problem using GIS technologies. Some teams took their projects a step further and also turned their maps into interactive web and mobile GIS applications.<\/p>\n<p>Here are their use case scenarios:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cNice Ride Route Analysis\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Brandon Davis, BJ Klenke, Briana Johnson<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Choropleth_map\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2090 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8613-small-300x186.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Brandon Davis, BJ Klenke, and Briana Johnson\" width=\"300\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8613-small-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8613-small.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The Nice Ride application helps visitors and residents using Minneapolis\/St Paul\u2019s bike share system, Nice Ride, quickly and easily identify the cities\u2019 190 different \u201ccheck-in\u201d spots, which users are required to visit every 30 minutes to avoid surcharges.<\/p>\n<p>Users simply plug in their destination, and the program automatically generates a map showing riders fun destinations (e.g. museums, parks, pubs, bus stops) they\u00a0can ride to\u2014while also indicating which stations they should check-in at along the way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cDinner-Out Application\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Doug Pouliot, Francis Omwoyo, Sean Wadman<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2094 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8620-small-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Doug Pouliot, Francis Omwoyo, and Sean Wadman.\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8620-small-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8620-small.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/em>\u201cA person has to eventually eat.\u201d That\u2019s the reasoning behind the Minneapolis Dinner-Out app, which provides users with a live communication hub where consumers can submit reviews of local restaurants via their mobile devices.<\/p>\n<p>The application also maps out where each restaurant is as well as the various forms of transportation that can get you there.<\/p>\n<p><strong> \u201cHome Sweet Home\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Jake Blue, James Dallman, Patrick Kowal<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2091 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8630-small-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Jake Blue, James Dallman, and Patrick Kowal.\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8630-small-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8630-small.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u00a0The \u201cHome Sweet Home\u201d project is designed to help families\u2014specifically those moving cross-country\u2014quickly and easily identify the best places to live in Minneapolis, Minn.<\/p>\n<p>Members from this group began their search by mapping neighborhoods that are suitable based on a number of common house-hunting criteria, including lot size; price range; allowed crime rate; scarcity of nearby condemned properties; location preferences (i.e., proximity to schools, parks, hospitals, etc.); and preferred transportation routes (i.e., bus, light-rail, bike).<\/p>\n<p>The group then identified the top five Minneapolis neighborhoods\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Choropleth_map\">using a choropleth map<\/a>\u2014to showcase areas that could potentially be a good fit for families.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cDo Demographics Influence Elections?\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Stan Silverberg and Chris Johnson<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2092 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8593-small-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Stan Silverberg and Chris Johnson.\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8593-small-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8593-small.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>This project aims to identify political trends for the state of Minnesota\u2014with a specific emphasis on the Twin Cities metro area. Using demographics such as race, age, income, and geographic location, users will be able to view a breakdown of voting results by demographics in the rural counties and in the Twin Cities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Dunwoody Campus Story Map<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>Curtis Meriam, Wyatt Spencer, Joseph Irey, Matt Anderson<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-2093 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8604-small-300x197.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Curtis Meriam, Wyatt Spencer, Joseph Irey, and Matt Anderson.\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8604-small-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/IMG_8604-small.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The Dunwoody Campus Map application aims to provide prospective students and their families with a better idea of what the Dunwoody campus looks like.<\/p>\n<p>The app incorporates CAD drawings and geo-referenced photos at different on-campus locations to provide a virtual tour of the campus exterior.
