Dunwoody Architecture students and American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) chapter members have spent the last few months asking established architects for sketches of buildings\u2014on paper napkins.<\/p>\n

The group of students voluntarily sent out more than 170 letters\u2014reaching 25 different countries and 6 continents\u2014to well-known architectural firms asking for architects to participate in their June 9 fundraiser: a silent auction event where attendees can bid on the one-of-a-kind sketches.<\/p>\n

Proceeds from the event, which is titled \u201cProcess: Sketches from Masters to Students\u201d, will fund study abroad scholarships for the Architecture students.<\/p>\n

Why napkin art? <\/strong><\/p>\n

But, why sketches on napkins?<\/p>\n

Well, according to AIAS Treasurer Taylor Parker-Greene and AIAS Chapter President Kyle Huberty, napkin art actually dates back many years, evolving from the notion that writers, artists and architects can\u2019t help but sketch ideas on any form of medium within reach\u2014many times napkins.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s an age-long history to the concept,\u201d Huberty said. \u201cIt\u2019s the excessively creative person that just can\u2019t stop. They\u2019re in a restaurant talking–but still drawing something.\u201d<\/p>\n

The students explained they were further inspired by the idea of a napkin sketch auction after learning that a few other colleges have held similar, successful fundraisers.<\/p>\n

The process<\/strong><\/p>\n

The group began their request earlier last year by first compiling a list of architects to approach for the project\u2014many of whom included students\u2019 inspirations and personal favorites. The students then worked to draft their initial \u201cask\u201d letter.<\/p>\n

However, Huberty and Parker-Greene said their main concern was having the bustling architects even notice\u2014let alone open\u2014the letter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t want it to be just another plain envelope asking for something,\u201d Huberty said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wanted to catch their eye,\u201d Parker-Greene agreed.<\/p>\n

So, on each envelope the students sketched a famous building designed by the architect, hoping the personal touch would pique their interest.<\/p>\n
