{"id":1824,"date":"2016-03-21T11:20:25","date_gmt":"2016-03-21T16:20:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dunwoody.edu\/blog\/?p=1824"},"modified":"2016-03-21T11:20:25","modified_gmt":"2016-03-21T16:20:25","slug":"auto-industry-has-the-need-dunwoody-has-the-grads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/2016\/auto-industry-has-the-need-dunwoody-has-the-grads\/","title":{"rendered":"Auto industry has the need, Dunwoody has the grads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Industry speaks at March open house <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1826 \" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_6666-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Auto Open House event\" width=\"328\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_6666-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_6666.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" \/>Dunwoody Automotive invited representatives from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lutherauto.com\/\">Luther Automotive Group<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walser.com\/\">Walser Automotive Group<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/aaspmn.org\/\">Alliance of Automotive Service Providers-Minnesota (AASP)<\/a> to speak at the College\u2019s open house event this month, which was held Tuesday, March 15.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Reinarts, Automotive Dean, said the goal of the event was to help organizations find potential hires as well as provide students and their guests with a better understanding of what the automotive job market looks like right now.<\/p>\n<p>And what does it look like?<\/p>\n<p>According to Judell Anderson, Executive Director of AASP: \u201cDesperate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>All three organizations confirmed that automotive job opportunities are skyrocketing\u2014and shops and dealerships across the nation are in need of technicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I left my office, we had 43 openings,\u201d said Meg Miller, HR Recruiter for Luther Automotive Group. \u201cThe opportunities are endless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, auto mechanics are in such demand, many automotive organizations are hiring recent graduates\u2014and even current students\u2014to work. And for organizations like Walser Automotive, Dunwoody College is one of the first places they look.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why a Dunwoody student?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years, we have all gone out and simply tried to steal one another\u2019s technicians,\u201d said Walser Automotive Corporate Service Director Jeff Lamott. \u201cBut as a business model, it doesn\u2019t make sense to put an ad in the paper and hope you can get someone from another store.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-1827\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_6673-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of students talking at Auto Open House event\" width=\"334\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_6673-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/IMG_6673.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 334px) 100vw, 334px\" \/>\u201cMaybe that\u2019s a short term solution for now, but probably a better solution would be to hire people at an entry level\u2014student graduates for an example\u2014bring them in, provide them with mentorship, and then grow them into a technician from the ground up,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd to do that, we immediately look for organizations that provide students like that, or we look around and ask where we have gotten people from before\u2026and Dunwoody would be the answer to both of those.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Luther Automotive also has a long history of hiring Dunwoody graduates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral of our managers and technicians have come from Dunwoody,\u201d Miller said. \u201cWe always look for a well-rounded individual&#8211;someone who has the skill but also has the drive to learn more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe definitely find that in a Dunwoody student.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Industry reps to return May 24<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A first-time event for the department, Reinarts couldn\u2019t be more pleased with the end result.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the most beneficial part of the event\u2014for both prospective students and their parents\/guardians and guests\u2014was being able to talk directly with industry,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen parents come to an open house, they\u2019ll often ask \u2018will my son or daughter be able to get a job, and if so how much will they be able to make?\u2019 Those answers, coming from me or one of our other instructors, could be perceived as self-serving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut by having industry there, we direct those questions to them and they\u2019ll tell the parents and the students exactly how much they will be able to make and what the job market and career outlook looks like right now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why we wanted them there.
