{"id":1605,"date":"2015-10-30T07:53:58","date_gmt":"2015-10-30T12:53:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dunwoody.edu\/blog\/?p=1605"},"modified":"2015-10-30T07:58:11","modified_gmt":"2015-10-30T12:58:11","slug":"minnesota-multi-housing-association-awards-construction-project-management-student-with-madacs-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/2015\/minnesota-multi-housing-association-awards-construction-project-management-student-with-madacs-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Minnesota Multi Housing Association awards Construction Project Management student with MADACS Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1607 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0108-small-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Construction Project Management student and WITC Scholarship recipient Marydithe Edgerton holding MADACS award\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0108-small-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0108-small.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Congratulations to Construction Project Management student and WITC Scholarship recipient Marydithe Edgerton, who was recently awarded with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mmha.com\/MAIN\/MADACS\/2015-MADACS-Winners\">Multi housing Achievement in Design, Advertising and Community Support (MADACS) Award in Individual Maintenance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Award\u2014given annually by the Minnesota Multi Housing Association (MHA)\u2014recognizes an individual who independently manages the maintenance of an apartment building while also making significant contributions to the progression of the multi housing industry.<\/p>\n<p>The MHA is a state-wide, non profit organization with over 2,000 members representing more than 250,000 housing units.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>A better life<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Earlier this year, Edgerton applied for <a href=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/women\/scholarship-information\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Dunwoody<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u2019s Women in Technical Careers Scholarship<\/span><\/a>, which provides financial, academic and personal support to women pursuing a non-traditional career.<\/p>\n<p>Edgerton, who graduated high school in 2010, said it was a \u201cno-brainer\u201d to go back to school\u2014the difficult part was figuring out how to balance five days of work and four nights of class each week.<\/p>\n<p>But, \u201cI knew I had to go to college to make a living,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>So, a few months later, when Edgeton learned she was not only accepted into Dunwoody but had also received the scholarship, she knew it was time to go back.<\/p>\n<p>Edgerton is now halfway through her first semester in the Construction Project Management program.<\/p>\n<p>Despite now being a full-time student, Edgerton still helps manage <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aeonmn.org\/properties\/lamoreaux\/\">The Lamoreaux apartment complex<\/a>, an affordable housing building in Minneapolis. Her responsibilities range from replacing drywall, to fixing a leaky faucet, to helping set up cable TV. Edgerton also confirms that the apartment\u2019s lights work, doors lock, and the carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are on\u2014ensuring the building is a clean and safe place to live.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>The nomination process<\/strong><\/h5>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1608\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1608\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1608 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/dunwoody.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/The-Lamoreaux-14-250x250.jpg\" alt=\"The Lamoreaux Apartments. Photo credit to www.aeonmn.org\/properites\/lamoreaux<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Edgerton\u2019s supervisors nominated her for the award this past spring, impressed by her consistent dedication to the building. Over the summer, MHA Judges visited the apartment complex where Edgerton showed them the building, explained her responsibilities, and participated in a formal Q&amp;A. Edgerton discovered she won the award in late September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWinning this award means a lot to me,\u201d Edgerton said. \u201cEspecially because I have only been in maintenance for about a year and a half.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince then, I have put so much of myself into this building. Not only in the pride I take in it, but also on behalf of all the residents that live here. They know that I am here to help them. I don\u2019t ignore them or discount their opinions. I work with them as much as I can because, after all, this is their home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Edgerton will graduate with an associate\u2019s degree in Construction Project Management in Spring of 2017.
